I have loved to fish ever since I was a very young boy. My passion for it has only increased with my age. I have very strong memories of wondering if I would still enjoy it as I became older. To my surprise, my, love of it has only increased with time. Being on the water, on a pier or dock has become more satisfying than ever before. It is truly my therapy and release.
As a father, there is nothing better than watching your kids enjoy your hobbies and passions. So I must share this story about my oldest son, Reo and his catch of a lifetime. It was a few months before his Bar Mitzvah, and we went to Honey Moon Island looking for that elusive Snook. We had never caught one before, but I knew where and how to go about it. It was summertime, and Snook were on the beaches preparing for the spawn. I’ve always enjoyed using light tackle and making the fight much more of a challenge. Reo was using an ultra-light rod and reel with 6 LB. test line. After a little wait, he gets the bite we were waiting for. The fight seems to last forever, and the Snook almost takes all his line! Reo was able to run down the beach and gain some line back. Reo handles it like a champ and lands his 1st ever Snook! It measured 37 inches and was a thing of beauty. After some quick pictures and a measurement, we released her back into the water. Now keep in mind that this was 15 years ago, and I have caught many Snook since, but not one bigger than 34 inches. My biggest Snook actually came from the same spot that Reo caught his about a year later.
I sent his picture into a magazine that I have been reading for many years. They actually put his picture in the magazine a couple of years later. They misspelled his name in it (Red instead of Reo), and my friends teased him about that for many years. Reo does like to remind us that he MADE the magazine and we have not!
It’s fishing in my backyard, on a bank somewhere or 60 miles out in the Gulf, nothing makes me happier. We truly live in paradise in this area, and you do not have to be a rich person for this. Rande can help you find that perfect home for this, from a small pond to a saltwater canal. So come share my passion, and tell me about the one that DIDN’T get away!
